Vancouver, B.C. (May 14, 2019) – First West Capital’s Kristi Miller has been recognized as a YWCA Woman of Distinction nominee in the category of Business and the Professions. The program held its annual gala on May 13 honouring extraordinary women leaders in Metro Vancouver who have shown professional leadership and made a significant difference within their industry, business and community. Miller, a wife and mother of three, was recognized for her commitment to meaningful change in her community while driving the success of First West Capital fuelled by her 25 years of expertise and dynamic leadership in the financial services sector.
“I’m humbled to be included in the company of so many accomplished professionals,” says Miller. “I applaud the YWCA for its ongoing work supporting women, children and families in our community.”
Miller founded First West Capital, a subsidiary of First West Credit Union, in 2010 after identifying a significant need for alternative financing solutions in the underserved mid-market. Since then, she’s helped close $250 million worth of business to date and greatly improved access to capital for small- and medium-sized businesses across Canada. Under Miller’s leadership, First West Capital has grown into an international, full suite junior capital firm with a team of thirteen, and she continues to secure additional capital, increase capacity and lead the expansion across Canada and the US. Most recently, Kristi was recognised as one of BC Business’ Most Influential Women in Business.
In addition, Miller has worked hard to give back to her community and made many important contributions through her involvement in local organizations such as Junior Achievement of B.C., Young Women in Business’s Blossom Program, Association of Women in Finance, Vancouver International Marathon Society, the B.C. Provincial Child Care Council and the Fulmer Foundation. In 2017, she was awarded the Canadian Venture Capital Association Ted Anderson Community Leadership Award for her outstanding commitment to her community.
“Kristi has been a catalyst of growth, not just for clients, but for First West Credit Union. Her tremendous energy and commitment extends also into our communities where she gives back, including developing leaders of tomorrow,” shares First West Credit Union CEO, Launi Skinner. “I admire Kristi as a leader because she is driven and results-oriented, yet she truly cares about the success of the businesses she helps and the community organizations she contributes her heart, mind and effort to. I congratulate Kristi on this well-deserved recognition.”
Miller is one of a small group of women in comparable roles in finance and has demonstrated her strength as a leader by successfully pioneering a sustainable and profitable business, mentoring future female leaders, participating in her community and raising a family.
“I am fortunate to be able to deliver on our vision of nurturing communities and economies – one company and one entrepreneur at a time. It’s rewarding to provide dynamic opportunities for investors and stakeholders and quality employment for top talent,” says Miller. “Like the YWCA, we continually strive to create good things in each of our communities.”
